AP Chemistry Scoring

MC = 50% of score (60 questions). FRQ = 50% (short answer + long essay + lab question, total 71 points raw).

  • Score 5: ~70–100% composite
  • Score 4: ~55–69%
  • Score 3: ~40–54%
  • Score 2: ~25–39%

AP Chemistry Exam Structure

The AP Chemistry exam consists of multiple-choice questions and free-response questions, each contributing 50% to your final score.

Section I: Multiple Choice

  • • 60 questions in 90 minutes
  • • Individual and question sets
  • • No calculator allowed
  • • 50% of total exam score

Section II: Free Response

  • • 7 questions in 105 minutes
  • • 3 long answer, 4 short answer
  • • Calculator allowed
  • • 50% of total exam score

Score Calculation Method

Based on 2023 Exam Scoring Guidelines - these scores may not be 100% accurate:

  1. Multiple Choice: Raw score out of 60 points
  2. Free Response: Combined score from all 7 questions
  3. Weighted Score: MC × 0.75 + FRQ × 1.07
  4. AP Score: Converted to 1-5 scale based on thresholds
